After getting two intoxicated friends away Walter Hugh Naughton, aged 22, a motor mechanic, returned to a car over which a police watch had been set and was arrested for being intoxi- | cated in charge. He was examined by I a doctor, the consequence of which was a long report for the Magistrate's perusal. At the conclusion of the hearing Mr Stilwell said he thought that it j was a case where there should merely i be a fine, and imposed a fine of £ls with cancellation of defendant’s license for 12 months. FOURTEEN DAYS’ IMPRISONMENT DUNEDIN, This Day. "For doing a favour to a friend this man will lose his position held with the City Corporation for 20 years.” staled counsel when Reginald Hector Gilland pleaded guilty in the Police Court to intoxication while in charge of a car. The friend, who owned an old model car but could not drive, asked Gillan to drive him to his bach. The car stalled and when Gillan was cranking it an inspector came on the scene. Gillan, who is a motor driver by occupation. was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, and his license cancelled for twelve months.
