HEAVY SNOWSTORM
EASTERN UNITED STATES OVER FIFTY FEOPLE DEAD TRAFFIC DISRUPTED (U.P A.—By Electric Telegraph-Copyright! NEW YORK, 26th November. More than 50 people are dead in the eastern United States of America after one of the heaviest November snowstorms in history. The storm disrupted traffic, prevented aeroplanes from leaving the (round marooned isloated communities, and drove two vessels aground. Motor accidents caused by the icy pavements were responsible for most of the deaths, but fire and exposure killed at least 12 people. The storm area extended from ! Georgia and Alabama, where snow flurries and freezing temperatures were reported, through New England, where the snowfall ranged from a few inches to 22 inches in Massachusetts and Vermont. Low temperatures are reported in the Middle West, and .snow fell in several of the south-eastern States. New York had the heaviest November snow in history, seven and a half inches being recorded with a temperature of 18 degrees, the lowest on record for the date. A high wind piled up drifts of snow in the New York streets. An unusual display of lightning showed up weirdly against the thickly falling snow. Renewed gales in the English Channel caused a delay in the departure of the train ferry from Dover early this morning, and in Plymouth the 1118-ton coastal steamer Jellicoe Rose was driven ashore. The searchlights of the aircraftcarrier Furious were turned on the ship as attempts were made to get a breeches buoy across to her. They succeeded after seven failures, and the crew of 13 were safely removed. In the west country numbers of roads are impassable, and snow is lying to a depth of several inches in Yorkshire.
