Convicted through a dictograph hidden in their cell, Peter Kortens and Daniel Prytuk Danial Kanuka were sentenced to hang for the fatal beating of an 81-year-old farm woman, Anna Cottick, during a burglary, after her husband had been clubbed into unconsciousness. This is the first time in Manitoba that dictograph records have been admitted as evidence. ihe police listened in while accused discussed the crime, agreeing that they should not have done it. A police stenographer recorded every word, ensuring accuracy, and another stenographer made a similar record in an adjoining room.
