THOUSANDS HOMELESS AND STARVING
APPEAL TO N.Z. FAR EAST RELIEF COMMITTEE r United Press Association! WELLINGTON, This Day. The Far East Relief Committee has received the following cable from Hong Kong: “The South China refugee problem is assuming alarmingly distressing proportions and several hundred thousand ore homeless and starving. We urgently request you to assist with finance, personnel, foodstuffs and medical ma-! terial. Appeal to the whole country for assistance and remit.” Sir James Elliott, chairman of the Far East Relief Committee, states that a special meeting of the committee will be held next week to discuss this cable j and to decide what action will be taken j by the committee. The committee has, during the past 12 months, maintained four doctors in j the Far East, and medical equipment and some 20 cases of linen and clothes had been supplied, and the sum of £2OOO was remitted to the International Red Cross in China. At the present time two New Zealand doctors remain in China, Mr G. Maaka is stationed at j Ichang and Dr. T. A. Watson at Chengchow.
