STRAPPING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN
PERMISSIBLE ONLY FOR SERIOUS MISCONDUCT CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD DECISION (United Press Aeeociationl CHRISTCHURCH. 24th November. Boys and girls attending school in the Canterbury Education Board district will no longer receive corporal punishment for offences associated with their school work. This is laid down definitely in the new regulations which have been issued by the board and which are designed to tighten up considerably existing regulations. Corporal punishment w’ill in future be administered only for cases of serious i misconduct and an official record will be kept of all occasions on which it <s applied. The most drastic change in the new i regulations is that abolishing such punishment for school work. The full regulations, which will apply to all schools under the jurisdiction of the board, have been issued as an instruction to teachers. They are as follows: (1) Corporal punishment of girls '■ prohibited except for serious misconduct. No boy shall be punished for . school w’ork. (3) In all cases corporal punishment should be administered only by , head teachers who are, however, given authority to delegete this power to experienced assistants. «4) The head teacher shall keep a I record of all cases of corporal punishment. showing the extent and reason therefor, but not the name ot the boy concerned. The record for any one year may be destroyed after a subsequent inspection visit to the school (5) A head teacher will be held responsible for any breach of these unless he (the head teacher) can show that the assistant has acted in a manner contrary to his instructions
