MONTHLY MEETING IN NELSON PROPOSED NEW ROAD ACCESS TO BAY DISTRICT SURVEY OF RABBIT ISLAND ROUTE The monthly meeting of the Nelson Advisory Committee took place at Port . Nelson when the following members were present: Messrs J. Dicker (in tiie j chair). T: C. Brash. H. E. Stephens, E. E. Nottage, A. Brown. H. W. ChisnaU, ' W. P. Salmond, A. Forsyth. J. B Scott, ! and A E. Lindup. Also in attendance , were: Messrs J. H. Brunt. R. T. Carlyon. R. E. Binfielcl and A. T. Douglas. An ; : apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr G. Stratford. RABBIT ISLAND ROAD It was considered that the survey of . the various routes for a road across Rabbit Island should be proceeded with I without undue delay, and by resolution j the transport sub-committee was instructed to confer with the chairman and the engineer of the Waimea County ■ Council and also to meet the Council : in meeting if considered necessary with i a view to furthering the project. WASTAGE IN EXPORT FRUIT ' i ! The secretary reported that the in- i 1 vestigation into the extent of wastage | t in export fruit shipped during the past' ; season was proceeding, with special at-! tention meanwhile to the variety Coxs j Orange concerning which a report! would be available to members prior j to next meeting. | LOCAL MARKET SUBSIDY The Director of Horticulture advised' that owing to the additional amount of \ j work involved it would not be possible ( : to issue an acknowledgement of the : receipt of monthly returns received | ( from growers such acknowledgement to! certify that the number of cases inciud[ed in the return were approved for 1 subsidy purpose. Arrangements were j | being made, however, to finalise these returns at the earliest possible date, 1 j and to give every grower a clear fort-1 : night to check over the statements! | which would be issued by the Depart- j ! ment prior to the payment of subsidy, i To ensure delivery growers were ad- { vised to forward their monthly returns j ; by registered mail. j The director also stated that when a i j grower had completed his local sales j for the season he should forward a j ! memo advising the Department that the . return being submitted was the final ' i one for the season, thus enabling the j j department to complete this grower’s l ; seasonal statement and submit it to the I grower for final check of the quantity. I I The Advisory Committee recommend j j growers to take particular note of this | point when forwarding their final re- \ turns. i LOCAL MARKET SUBSIDY ADVANCE Mr Brash reported on the steps which j had been taken with a view to obtain- I ! ing an’ advance payment of 6s per case ; from the local market subsidy. On Mr Brash's recommendation, a i letter was addressed to the Minister of j Agriculture requesting that a deputa-; tion should be received on Thursday of j this week with a view to finalising this j matter. ROUGH HANDLING OF FRUIT ! Arising from a letter received from the Stoke Fruitgrowers’ Association, the. Director of the Horticulture Division of J the Department of Agriculture has been ' requested to supply copies of reports; from his district officers relative to ihe condition of Nelson fruit arriving on ! the various local markets. By this means, it is hoped in conjunction with j the inspection made by the local officers j prior to despatch to trace as far as pos- ; sible the cause of deterioration during transit. MANUFACTURE OF FRUIT JUICES ! In reply to correspondence issued relative to the manufacture of fruit! juices in Nelson by a growers' co-oper-ative company or by a State-owned fac • j tory, the Stoke Association favoured a j Co-operative Company, the Waimea and Motueka District Exporters’ Association favoured a State factory, whilst the Redwood’s Valley. Mahana Associations and the Hills Union favoured a j State factory subject to the receipt of further information. The report relative to the manufacture of fruit juices was not yet available for publication and it was decided to defer further action until this report was received. POOLING OF CHARGES The secretary was instructed to communicate with the district associations giving particulars from the information available bearng on the question of the i pooling of export charges for the three j Nelson ports, in order that the associJ ations might have an opportunity of | giving an expression of opinion thereon I prior to the next meeting.
