SERIES OF CHARGES TERM OF REFORMATIVE TREATMENT IMPOSED IBy Telegraph-Press Association) WELLINGTON. This Day. William Freeney Keenan, aged 36 years, salesman, was convicted and sentenced to two years’ reformative treatment on one charge of obtaining goods and money by false pretences, and ordered to come up within that period if called on on three other similar charges and one of attempting to obtain money by means of false pretence. It was stated that his method was to present not valueless cheques but promissory notes. In this way he obtained goods and money from a Chinese fruiterer and a European in Christchurch, and lrom an Indian and Chinese in Wellington. On 24th March he took a promissory note into a shop in Wellington and the manager took it to the back of the store with the intention of notifying the police. Accused disappeared and was subsequently located by a constable after a chase through the streets.
The Magistrate. Mr Hewitt: “What sort of record has he got?” Detective-Sergeant Doyle: “He has got a shocking record. Sir. This ft his 41st appearance, commencing in 1923.” Detective-Sergeant Doyle added that he was an absolute menace to tradespeople.
