OBITUARY
SIR T. VANSITTART BOWATER, M.P. (United Frewi Awomtion-By Elarrrte Telegraph—Onprriahn LONDON. 28th March. , The death has occurred of Sir T. j Vansittart Bowater, M.P. for City of | London, and a former Lord Mayor of ■ London. Sir Vansittart Bowater was born in i Manchester in 1862 and educated at Broughton College. Manchester, and went to London in 1 -to) and heTd many offices. His first important post was that of representative on the Court of ! the Common Council of London in 1899. and four years later he became Chairman of the Cattle Markets Committee. In 1905 he was a Sheriff and from 1907 an Alderman. In 1913-14 he was Lord Mayor, while later he was one of his Majesty’s Lieutenants of the City of London. Besides being associated with the work of administration or the greatest city in the world, Sir Vansittart Bowater has been engaged in many other fields. He was keenly interested in public welfare work and had neon treasurer of the Royal Masonic Institute for Boys, a trustee of Mol d-n College, a governor of the Royal Hospitals, governor of the Royal Irish Society, and a Freeman of the City of Manchester. He was elected as a member of Parliament for the City of London in 1924. being a Conservative nominee. He was given many awards and decorations. including the baronetcy which he has held since 1914. eight years after he had been created a knight. His decorations included the Royal Older of the Redeemer of Greece, the Palmes i Academique of France, the Order of the I Crown of Belgium, the Order of the j
Dannebrog of Denmark, the Legion of; Honour, and the Order of Leopold of i Belgium. He was also honorary colonel of the Tenth Battalion. Royal Fusiliers, belonged to many clubs, and was twice married. He visited New Zealand early in 1933.
MR CHENG HSIAO-HSU TOKIO. 28th March. The death has occurred of Mr Cheng Hsiao-hsu. former Premier of Manchukuo'. Hsiao-hsu Cheng was born at Fuchow in 1359 and was formerly Chinese Consul at Kobe. He was Administrative Envoy al Hunan and later became Director of the Shanghai Savings Bank. After the conquest of Manchuria he went to the new State of Manchukuo with Henry Pu Yi and for a time was Prime Minister. He was also Minister of Education.
