Rare Birds and Plants In a plea for the preservation of rare birds and plants. Captain E V. Sanderson. president of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, remarks that publicity proves fatal to the hopes of royal albatrosses which tried to nest on a lonely spot of the coast near Dunedin. The finders of the nest decided to keep „ their knowledge to themselves, but unJ fortunately they took a friend into their confidence —and soon their discovery found its way into print. It 2 was good news for vandals, who went 2 to some trouble to destroy the nest by pelting pieces of rock, “That kind of vandal J s not the only enemy of rare j birds ” be said. "Certain unscrupulous j collectors are ever alert for clues which j will help them to obtain illegal posses- * sion of rare specimens, and the an--2 nouncement of the presence of a rare y plant or bird is invariably followed gy a hunt for the rarity New Zealanders who happen to see such birds or their nests are exhorted to refrain from disclosing the locality '*
