The Netherlands Government has issued a decree for the enlargement of the army by 25 battalions or 17.000 men, states the Amsterdam correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” These are intended to reinforce the eastern frontier, which is permanently manned by 70,000 men equipped with antitank guns and anti-aircraft batteries, and to withstand a first attack, enabling the mobilisation of the entire army. The frontier is also guarded by 42 forts which were built in 1936. The enlargement of the army is regarded as the fulfilment of a moral obligation to be prepared for all emergencies. The Geneva correspondent of “The Times” states that 87 Deputies have petitioned the Swiss Government, urging the reinforcement of the country’s defences, especially by anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns.
