New Zealand and British Empire three and six miles | champion, succeeded in lowering the j Dominion record for two miles, his I time being 9min 14 3-ssec. The pre- ! vious record was 9min 19 4-ssec, and ! was held by Murakoso. Japan. The ‘ best time ever previously registered \ by a New Zealander was 9min 20 l-sscc. by Randolph Rose in 1927. Matthews had the assistance over the l early laps of lour handicap runners, but over the last lap he had to make j his own pace, and this makes his cl - i fort all the more meritorious. He 1 started off at exceptional pace, the < first mile taking 4min 28sec. The last j mile was run in 4rnin 51 4-ssec. The new track is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and at the con- i elusion of his run Matthews expressed ■ himself as exceptionally pleased with it.
