MOTUEKA

BRICK SCHOOL BUILDING NEGOTIATIONS FOR PURCHASE (From Our Own Correspondent] The Nelson Education Board advised the Motueka Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday, that the Minister of Education had approved of the acceptance of the offer, made by the Council for the purchase of the brick building at Motueka. in the terms of the Council’s letter of 11th August last, except that in regard to section 1. that the area of land to go with the building shall extend 18 feet on the north, 10 feet on the west and 8 feet on the south as against the 14 feet on all sides that the Council suggested. The writer stated that it would be appreciated if the Council would advise him as to the result of the ratepayers’ poll, as early as convenient. The Mayor (Mr R. J. L. York) moved that the Council consider, at its next meeting, a motion to apply to the Local Bodies’ Loans Board for sanction to raise a loan of £I4OO by poll of ratepayers. This was by Councillor Trewavas and carried. In reviewing the matter, the Mayor stated that the first proposal that was put before the Council by the School Committee was one for £3.000. T>ater the brick school building was offered to the Council for £2.000. and on a further request being made the Council made an offer of £I4OO. subject to a poll of the ratepayers. The terms were that the payments extend over a period of twenty years, and that interest only be paid for #the first two years. The Council, without prejudice, would ap- ; ply to the Loans’ Board for sanction to \ raise a loan of £ 1400 by poll of rate- ! payers. The matter would then rest entirely with the ratepayers to decide what action was to be taken. Personally he intended taking no part in the organising of meetings, etc. Councillor Trewavas said that he intended adopting a similar attitude.
