MOTUEKA FIRE BRIGADE

DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH | COUNCIL MATTER OF FALSE ALARMS j I l From Our Own Correnpondenll j A deputation consisting of Captain A. Canton and Fireman 1). Skilton waited on the Motucka Borough C'oun-1 oil in regard to the recent fire brigades’! demonstration, false alarms, etc. Captain Canton stated that the last time he had waited on the Council it had been for an assurance of financial assistance in connection with the demonstration. lie was now pleased to report that owing to the splendid support received from the public generally the brigade had come out with a small credit balance and. under the circumstances, no financial help would be required from the Council. He drew attention to the fact that recently two false alarms had been given —a matter that was viewed seriously by the brigade—and asked for liic Council’s co-operation in an endeavour to stop a repetition. lie also asked the Council to appoint a representative to attend all brigade meetings. The two lire engines, he said, would require an overhaul in the near future and he added that the brigade would ccrtainl. like a new and up-to-date engine, which would be desirable when a water scheme was inaugurated by the Council. The Mayor, in thanking the depula lion for the information that had been laid before the Council, said that false alarms were occurrences that should not be looked upon lightly; some people seemed to treat the matter as a joke. The Mayor agreed that the lire engines were out-of-date; but the time was not far distant when the Borough i would have to go in for a high pressure water supply and when that came a, new type of engine would be required. The way in which the local brigade ■ had carried through the demonstration to a successful conclusion had been ex- i tremely gratifying to the Council. The [ public too had been behind the unctei- I ; taking and had given their whole- I i hearted support. ! Councillor Fry pointed out that the; ! Council was already represented on ! the brigade in that Councillor Simpson 1 j was a member, and moved that he bo j I appointed the official representative., j,This was seconded by the Mayor and! ! carried. I In making reference to the recent j fire at Riwaka the Mayor said that after ! the alarm had been given people rustled off on bicycles and cars and mure | or less created a danger on the roads. : He thought that in the case of country j I fires some other means should be i used to acquaint members of the brigade than by ringing the firebell. | It was resolved that a notice board : be erected at the fire station drawing j attention to the penalty involved Coj causing a false alarm. The Town Clerk was rcquestcu to forward a letter to the lire brigade ex- : pressing the Council's appreciation of | the successful manner in which the demonstration had been carried through by the Motucka brigade. Councillor Fry stated that since the i fire brigade had not spent the £3O j granted by ‘.he Ccuncl for the clemonI stration, he would that the lire j brigade be asked to make an inspection ; and report to the Council the localities ] in which, in their opinion, the driving I of fire pipes is necessary in order to j afford them reasonable qpportunities ] i of dealing with outbreaks of fire in the more closely settled areas DEATH AT SEA i l)v apli I'hrp.” A— > AUCKLAND. 17th November.
