REVOLT IN KURDISTAN
THE LEADER HANGED SEVERE PENALTIES ON OTHERS OBJECTION TO NEW METHODS [United lhefeii Association-By Electric Telegraph - Copy ri cb tl ISTANBUL, 15th November. A revolt in the Dersim district of Kurdistan in April, in which 5000 tribesmen were involved, was disclosed with the death sentence followed by the hanging of the leader, Seyid Riza, and ten associates. Four others were sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. Heavy penalties were imposed on 43. The tribes, which had only recently come under President Kernel Alalurk’s modernising ideas, resented the new administration divisions and the new methods of collecting taxes. They prefered the old method of bargaining with chiefs and objected to the presence of gendarmes and soldiers. The Government was obliged to use a force of 30,000 to suppress the rising. They employed bomber planes. Riza’s house was hit by a famous young Turkish airwoman, Sabiha Gockchen.
