Mr J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister, broadcasting from Bendigo, said: “I solemnly declare that my Government’s policy never has included, and never will include, conscription. There will be no conscription while my Government is in office. I give you a definite assurance."
This was the Prime Minister’s reply to allegations by Labour that the Federal Government was committed to a policy of conscription and war. Replying to Mr Lyons at Melbourne, Mr Curtin, Leader of the Opposition, said that no reliance could be placed on the Prime Minister’s declarations. He added: “If war broke out there would be conscription overnight." •
