OBITUARY

MRS SARAH REBECCA CHARLIES The death occurred recently at Appleby of Mrs S. R. Challies, widow of the late Alfred Challies, who predeceased her by only six weeks. Mrs Challies was the only daughter of Mr John Claridge, who lived for many years where the main road past the Appleby School turns towards the Moutere Hills and which is still often referred to as "Claridge’s Corner.” Mrs Challies lived quietly with her husband at Appleby where she had many friends, being well known and respected by everyone. For many years Mrs Challies was in charge of the Appleby Post Office, and she also took A keen interest in church affairs, remaining until the time of her death a generous supporter of St. Alban’s, Appleby. The funeral at the Waimea West Cemetery was largely attended, the service being conducted, in the absence of the Rev. Mr Saunders, by the Rev. Mr Evans of Spring Creek. Six of the nephews acted as pall-bearers. Mrs Challies leaves a family of four —Mrs W. Neen, Richmond, Messrs Len Challies, Tutaki, Fred and Percy, Appleby. There are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
