BRITONS INSULTED
FASCISTS IN TANGIER ITALIAN INFLUENCE SPREADS LONDON, Ist September. Britons in Tangier, capital of the international Moroccan zone, opposite Gibraltar, are subjected to insult# following a violent Fascist rising. Fascist Moors, Spaniards, and Italians machine-gunned a waterfront cafe. Later there was street fighting in the native quarter. One man was killed and three others were wounded seriously. Leaders of the English colony told a representative of the “Daily Telegraph” that it was unsafe to venture out of doors without a revolver. “We are stopped in the streets by armed Moors, who try to force us to say ‘Arriba Espana’ (‘Up Spain’), which is the rebel war cry,” they say. “Britain’s prestige is sinking lower and lower. Tangier is on the edge of a serious outbreak unless action is taken soon.” Britons in the town are forming St self-protection association. The chief cause for concern appears to be the spread of Italian influence, and the activities of French and German agents. Thousands of anti-British pamphlets are being distributed from the headquarters of General Franco, the Spanish rebel leader. The British cruiser Penelope is extending her stay in the port. The German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer and two Italian destroyers are in the harbour.
