REPORTED ERUPTION AT MT. BAGNA
NO SIGN SEEN BY PASSING STEAMER [United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright] (Received 11th September, 1.0 p.m.) RABAUL, 10th September. The officers and passengers of the steamer Malaita, which passed near Mount Bagna, stated that they saw no signs of anything unusual. They declared that the reports emanating from Australia of a serious eruption appeared to be exaggerated. Radio advice received at Canberra on Wednesday stated that a violent volcanic eruption occurred at Bougainville Island in the Solomon Group, 250 miles west of Rabaul. There is a large native population at the foot of Mount Bagna, where the eruption occurred, and grave fears for the natives’ safety was felt.
