FARMERS’ UNION
STOKE-RICIIMOND BRANCH A most enthusiastic meeting of the Stoke-Richmond branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in Richmond when the president, Mr R. C. T. Raine, occupied the chair, and twenty-five members were present. The president, in his opening address, expressed pleasure at the large number present, especially the new members, whom he cordially, welcomed. Mr Raine spoke of the aims of the union, and the valuable work that had been done in the past, but owing to the indifference shown by many farmers the membership had consisted of about only onequarter of the men on the land in the Dominion. However, a Dominion-wide drive for members was now being undertaken, and in.the Auckland province alone over 1000 new members had -Recently been elected, while an excellent response had been made by local farmers when a canvass of the district had been made. . Mr H. Schroder trading secretary, spoke of tho concessions that were being made to members of the union by various trading-companies. A general discussion followed on various matters of interest to farmers. These varied considerably, but pigrearing and the grading of baconers was one of tne chief items. In this connection it was resolved that Mr Gqrringe, Government Inspector in Swine Husbandry, be asked + o address a combined meeting of fruitgrowers and other farmers at a time and place to be decided later. On the motion of Mr E Croucher it was resolved that Mr and Mrs Stanley Haycock be congratulated on the selection of their daughter Miss O. Haycock, to represent the Girl Guides-of the Dominion at the world camp to be held in New York. It wa- decided that, in future a meet-. Ing of members be held on the third Monday in each month.
