THE LOAN PROPOSAL POLL

[To The Editor) Sir,—After reading the official advertisement issued by the Mayor in your columns I am in some perplexity as to the wording of the voting paper which is to be submitted to the ratepayers at the forthcoming poll. To any intelligent person who has followed the discussions on the water question it must be evident that the city’s reticulation is in urgent need of improvement but a voter who realises this and who does not wish to support the proposed Roding River Scheme apparently has no option of voting for /improved reticulation without supporting the Roding Scheme.

In separating the question of reticulation from the main issue one is tempted to conclude that this is an ingenious device to secure support from the unsuspicious ratepayer whether he is in favour of the £BB,OOO loan or not.—l am, etc..

NELSON WOMAN. Nelson, 28th April. ITo The Editor) Sir, —Mr William Rogers’ letter comes as a clear leading light out of a welter of suggestions, notions and criticisms. He picks on none of the small’ asides or petty points so plentifully put to us by previous correspondents but drives straight to the main point—good hearty backing of the Council we elected and faith in the scheme to which they have given such long and earnest consideration. Columns of red herring stuff are apt to befog and cloud the issue but whether the question be one of waxworks, gasworks, fireworks or waterworks, the fulminations of these gentlemen can easily be apportioned to the correct “works” by the ratepayers.—l am etc.
