BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL | The fortnightly meeting of the I Richmond Borough Council was held on | Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor | (Mr H. Warren Kelly). Councillors Nor--1 ris, Poole. Tuffnell. McGlashen, Pal- | mer. Councillor Polglazc was excused | from attendance. Accounts totalling £7O 15s 5d were passed for payment. FOREMAN'S REPORT The foreman’s report was read and adopted as follows: The outside material on the section sold to the Power Board has been moved into the other yard. I am now waiting for a workshop before I can shift the rest of the tools, etc. The grader has been worked on Wensley Road, Lower Queen street, Oxford street, the Nelson-Westport State highway and the Richmond-Col-lingwood State highway. The willow roots in the drain pipes in Salisbury road have been cleaned out.

Weeds have been cleaned off the following footpaths and watertables: Crescent street, Wensley road and Salisbury road. CORRESPONDENCE The Chief Inspector of Explosives forwarded the report on the storage of explosives in the borough. In one business place certain alterations are to be carried out, the present method of handling benzine being illegal. The Nelson Employers’ Association forwarded a copy of the award rates of wages to local bodies employees. It was resolved that the Council join the association, the annual subscription being £2 2s. The Secretary of the Nelson Education Board forwarded a circular regarding Coronation souvenirs and other matters in connection with that function. It was resolved that £3 3s be donated towards the celebrations in the borough. The Acting-Prime Minister wrote regarding the raising of funds for the King George V. National Memorial Funds. It was resolved that a subscription list be opened at the Town Clerk’s office and that the council donate £5 5s to the fund.

The Waimea Power Board notified that the Supervising Engineer had been authorised to provide streamers free as far as they are available with free electric current for decoration purposes during Coronation Week. The tariff for shop lighting during the month of May will also be reduced.

The Board is to be thanked for its generous action. FIRE ALARM The Waimea Electric Power Board wrote regarding the proposed siren for fire-alarm purposes with a coverage of one mile radius. The quotation provides for two push button starting points—one inside the Post Office (providing necessary arrangements are made) and the other where directed near the station. The total cost would be £3O odd.

Considerable discussion followed and it was finally decided that a quotation be secured for dismantling the bell tower and re-erecting at the fire station. OTHER MATTERS The subdivision of property in Waverley street was approved provided 18ft at the corner near by be dedicated to the Council. / It was resolved that the Football and Hockey grounds at Jubilee Park be mown in readiness for the season’s play.

It was decided that the main street be decorated for Coronation Week as far as the available material will permit, and that permission be secured from the P. and T. Department and the Power Board to make use of their poles for this purpose. It was resolved that Mayor, Town Clerk and one councillor execute the transfer of the property in Queen street to the Power Board on payment of the purchase money in full. Rubbish in the borough is to be collected on Wednesday, sth May.
