BASKETBALL

INTER-HOUSE MATCHES GOOD EVENING’S ENTERTAINMENT LADIES’ AND MEN’S COMPETITIONS Before another full gallery of spectators the second series of games for the Inter-House Shields for both ladies and men, were played last night in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium. Several close finishes were seen, and the scores in many cases did not give a true indication of the closeness of the play throughout. It was pleasing to see the good showing Locks gave against the strong McKenzie’s combination, and although the latter team won by a wide margin of points, the Lock team had a fair amount of possession of of the ball. The match between Russell’s ana Rovers was not good basketball and the new players will have to make a bigger effort to master the rules. The same may be said about Tennis Club and Trathen’s. It was very noticeable that with the exception of three players no definite attempt was being made to play the game in the way it is set out in the rules. If the men’s games are to become fast and skillful and of interest to the spectators there will have to be considerable tightening up in the playing of the rules. The Convent team proved too strong for Trathen’s and it seems that the former team will be among the placed teams this season. Their match with McKenzie’s A next week should prove one of the oustanding games - of the year.

The McKenzie B team held their own against Y.M.C.A. in the first half of the match, but as the Y.M.C.A. goaling improved the score soon mounted in the latter team’s favour. “Over defence” in the ladies matches is sometimes tried by players, but it seldom proves profitable to the offender. One player cost her side three points in penalty throws.

Regimental players are to be congratulated on the manner in which they threw the ball around in their game against Harriers. This team gave a fine exhibition of team play and speed, and deserved their win. It is to be regretted that Harriers did not field a team in regulation dress. This is a fault that must be overcome at once or the purpose of registered colours and uniforms will be entirely wasted. The superior combination of Buxton's men proved the winning factor in their game against Workers Co-op., but as in all the men’s games too many chances at goal were wild shots. Buxton’s ladies were playing more up to the form expected and easily disposed of the new combination known as Arawa.

The Hospital team playing against kia Toa demonstrated their ability to play the game to such an extent that many other teams have already made a note of a hard nut to crack when they meet this new combination. The goaling of Hospital was very reliable and formed a distinct contrast with the Kia Toa team in this department of the game.

The match between McKay’s and Hurst’s was a well played game by both teams, and except for the advantage of Hurst’s at centre the game was a very even one in every way, and on the whole a good exhribition to watch.

Fire Brigade and Wesley was more rough than scientific and the new team Warehouses gave a better exhibition than either of the former teams. In their match with Y.M.C.A. the ball was thrown about to some purpose and made the game very interesting to watch. RESULTS The results were as follows: LADIES’ SECTION McKenzie’s A beat Lock's, 30-6. Convent Old Girls beat Trathen’s, 15-2. Y.M.C.A. beat McKenzie’s B, 17-10. Buxton’s beat Arawa, 28-2.
