BASIC WAGE
PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYED - YOUTHS IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION URGED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RESOLUTION [By Telegraph—Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. An immediate investigation by the Associated Chambers of Commerce into the position of unemployed young persons between the ages of 17 and 22 years who are unable to find employment because of the basic wage is asked for in a resolution which was adopted unanimously by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Members described the situation of the unskilled non-manual type as acute and calling (or remedial action without delay.
A report prepared by Mr R. H. Nimmo setting out the position was adopted. It was suggested that a possible solution would be for the Government to amend the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act so that the Court of Arbitration when making awards could fix the ages at differing levels, according to the class of trade or business concerned at which the basic wage became applicable. Mr M. C. G. McCaul said under present legislation a lot of young men were going to be forced into manual oc* cupations when they had the ability serve their country in a better way by learning a trade or business.
