GODDESS LOSES CASE
APPEAL TO PRIVY COUNCIL LONDON. 15th April. The Privy Council dismissed an appeal from India on behalf of a Hindu Goddess. The trutstce of the goddess, Mohini, was ordered to pay costs The goddess is a Hindu family idol established by two Hindu brothcis in the middle of the 19th century in a Calcutta temple. They devoted portion of the proceeds of a successful business to worship of the goddess and stipulated for .similar worship on the part of their descendants. It was alleged that money which should have been devoted to the goddess, including gifts to poor Brahmins, had been secretly appropriated by members of the family. A suit was brought in a Calcutta Court on behalf of the goddess by Mohini The judges of the Court disagreed.
