AUSTRALIAN NAVY
RUMOURS BASELESS LONDON. 11th April It is not expected that any decisions will be readied regarding new Australian naval construction or major issues affecting the defence of the other Dominions until the meeting of the Imperial Conference next month. The political correspondent of the Australian Associated Press understands that most of the speculation, including rumours of specific building programmes, are baseless. The British Admiralty and naval officials at Australia House have no knowledge of the proposals to build a battleship at a cost of £8.000.000. On the contrary, naval experts point out that it would be contrary to the Commonwealth's recent naval policy. It is emphasised that battleships must operate as a squadron, and that for this reason the Commonwealth would need several of them. Some experts say that Australia, strategically, and also for training purposes, primarily needs cruisers and destroyers. Consequently, any augmentation resulting from the Imperial Conference will probably concern these categories.
