OVER-AGE CRUISERS
BRITAIN’S DECISION TO RETAIN NO SURPRISE IN AMERICA (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right) WASHINGTON, 17th December. Britain’s decision to retain five overage cruisers did not surprise and has occasioned no objection. Satisfaction is expressed that Britain has acted in strict accordance with the terms of the Escalator Clause in the Naval Treaty. The United States is without overage cruisers and a similar, step is impossible. THE RETAINED VESSELS Those cruisers to be retained in service are the Cadiff, the Ceres, the Caledon, the Calypso and the Caradoc. All were completed in 1917. UNITED STATES DESTROYER STRENGTH (Received 19th December, 8.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, 18th December. ' The “Herald-Tribune’s” Washington correspondent says it is reported that the United States will keep 19,000 tons extra destroyer strength by the transfer of the pruiser class permitted.under Article 17 of the Treaty which gives the United States 209,000 tons ot destroyers at the expiration of' the Treaty, compared with Britain’s 190,000.
