SPIRITED IMMIGRATION POLICY

The first responsibility of the Government was to make provision for the people already in the Dominion, said the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, replying to-day-to a deputation which advocated a spirited policy of immigration to counteract the effect of the falling birthrate. The Minister added that its next duty was to have ready for operation a plan to absorb newcomers into productive Work. “New Zealand does not want to bring people here to 'get in one another’s way. A plan of orderly placement must precede their arrival. The Minister said the birthrate question was a matter of particular concern to governments and economists throughout the world. Governments must give practical encouragement to mothers and expectant mothers must not be tortured by the worry of not being able to clothe the children they would bring into the world.
