WAKEFIELD

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION A LIVE BRANCH ’ Members of the Wakefield branch of the St. John Ambulance Association spent a memorable evening when Dr. Low, president of the Nelson Sub-centre, gave a very interesting talk on the history and work of the St. John members. He then presented certificates to the following successful candidates in the recent examinations.

Ladies, first aid: Olwyn M. Baigent, Grace R. Bastin, Olive M. Bird, Jean Close, Vera M. Close, Peggy Rose. Men: Douglas Baigent, Matthew G. Cuthbert, Russell A. Godbaz, Dennis J. Stringer. Home nursing, ladies: Olive E. Andrews, Friedrieu M. Chaytor, Nola C. Springer, Lyra PI. Wilkens. Men, Randal T. Anderson, Joseph H. Houston. On behalf of the Wakefield branch Dr. Low then presented to Superintendent Ashton a small gift in recognition of all he had done to help members. After Mr Ashton had returned thanks, he presented to Dr. Low a book entitled “The Knight of St. John in the British Empire” and inscribed in the book was the following “Presented to Dr. D. C. Low with the Secretary-General’s compliments, December 1936.” Mr Ashton had been entrusted with the book when in Wellington recently and asked to present it upon some suitable occasion and the Wakefield branch was honoured to think he chose this evening.

Mr F. W. Huggins, Sub-Centre secretary and Mr A. S. G. Adams, Assistant Sub-Centre secretary spoke encouragingly to Wakefield members and they were urged to compete for the B.M.A. Shield and Rotary Cup next winter.

An apology for absence from Dr. Closs was received and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for taking first aid classes during last winter.

Nelson members were also thanked for helping with the classes. Congratulations were received from Wellington for the high marks attained by the Wakefield candidates on their examination papers. In consequence of so many road accidents all who had the chance were urged to learn first aid. Supper was served and a happy gathering brought to a close.
