SPORTS MEETING

AT GOLDEN DOWNS A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING RESULTS OF EVENTS Last Saturday the Golden Downs State Forest Sports Club held the most successful meeting since its inauguration in 1928. In spite of showery weather a large number of visitors from Nelson and surrounding districts witnessed a lengthy programme of well contested events. The Rev. Mr Edgar, ably assisted by Mr Houston, of Wakefield, had charge of the children’s programme, while Mr N. Kerr, of Nelson, rendered invaluable assistance in the expeditious dispatch of the various chopping events. To these gentlemen the committee tenders a special vote of thanks. In addition to the above, the committee expresses its grateful thanks to friends who have liberally donated trophies and to those who assisted financially.

Owing to unforeseen circumstances, Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P., was unable to attend. Mr Holyoake kindly donated a medal to the winning competitor in the 250 yards Handicap. In Mr Holvoake’s absence the trophies were presented during the afternoon by Mr F. W. Foster, Conversator of Forests, who briefly stressed the importance of the meeting, inasmuch as it was conducive to greater social fraternity in a district where the population was scattered over a wide area.

Mr W. J. Dunnet, president of the Club, thanked the visitors for attending in such large numbers and contributing to the success of the meeting. '

| Various novelty.events caused much amusement, especially the mixed boot and wheelbarrow races.

The outstanding competitor of the day was L. Hahn, who conceded large starts in each of the chopping events and won impressively. Judges and handicanpers carried out their duties in a very efficient manner and a feature of the day’s sport was the perfect accord between officials and competitors.
