A NATIONAL THIRST
According to the latest figures from the Customs and Excise Department, 1 the amount of beer drunk in Britain 1 in 1935 was 575,164,000 gallons —j enough to float 76 battleships the size of H.M.S. Nelson! This allows every! man in the country an average of a 1 pint and a quarter of beer every day. j The fact that 1936 is a leap year will I mean that nearly £500,000 more will | be taken over the bars of public- 1 houses and in restaurants and clubs than in a normal year. The amount | of beer drunk in Britain increases | each year, and the total for 1935 is | 130,000,000 pints more than for the . previous year. The Chancellor of the i Exchequer can depend upon some £70,000,000 every year from duties on the beer which is drunk! J
