THE NELSON SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING LAST NIGHT A special general meeting of the Nelson Co-operative Building Society (Starr-Bowkett), was held at the Institute last evening, Mr F. W. Huggins being in the chair. The following resolution, of which notice had been given, was carried:— “To amend rule 72 of the rules of the Society by deleting the words ‘or provides himself with’ and by the addition after ‘at the same meeting’ of the words ‘at the same price per hundred pounds as the highest premium received at that meeting.’ ” The special meeting was then declared closed and the business of the fifth annual meeting was dealt with. The annual report and balance sheet for the year ended 18th October, 1930, were read and adopted. The report stated: — No. 1 Group Finance.—The total subscriptions paid in by members for the year amounts to £1968 Is, which together with the previous share subscriptions, makes a total of £8485 7s, representing an actual saving by members. The loans allotted during the year amount to £2900 11s 6d. Of this £ISOO 11s 6d was by ballot (free of interest) and £I4OO at auction, making a total of £10,300 11 s 6d advanced by the Group in five years’ operations. The balance of the profit and loss account amounts to £622 14s 6d, which shows that the Group is on a very sound basis.

No. 2 Group.—No. 2 Group commences operations on 19th October of this year, and already there are over 300 shares taken up, and members who intend taking up shares in this Group, but have not yet done so, are requested to get in touch with the secretary as soon as possible. Directors.—lt is with great regret that we have to record the death of Mr J. L. Robertson, a very valued member of the board of directors. Mr B. Holbrook was appointed a director by the board in accordance with Rule 27.

In accordance with the rules, Messrs J. B. Carr and F. W. Huggins retire from the directorate, and being eligible, offer themselves for re-elec-tion. Mr B. Holbrook also offers himself for election to the board. Auditors.—Messrs Vercoe, Gilbert, and Boyes offer themselves for reelection as auditors.

In conclusion, the directors wish to record their appreciation of the assistance rendered by everyone connected with _ the Society, in particular, the scrutineers at the appropriation meetings, the-solicitors of the Society, the auditors, and secretary, and finally all the members of the Society whose support and confidence have contributed so largely to its continued success.

The chairman made reference to the death of Mr J. L. Robertson, stating that he was a very valued member of the Society, and his passing was much regretted.

Messrs J. B. Carr and F. W. Huggins were re-elected to the board of directors, while Messrs B. Holbrook and C. R. Duke fill the places of Mr J. L. Robertson and Mr E. Fleming, who has retired.

Messrs Vercoe. Gilbert and Boyes were re-appointed auditors.

No. 1 Group’s free-of-interest ballot was won by Mrs J. N. Gascoigne. The chairman stated that the Society had a good credit balance and that another free-of-interest ballot would be held shortly.
