THE ASCOT RACES
ROYAL FAMILY NOT ATTENDING OWING TO COURT MOURNING (British Official Wireless) (Received 17th June. 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, 16th June. Owing to Court mourning, the King and other members of the Royal Family did not attend the Royal Ascot Race Meeting, which opened in fine weather to-day. The King’s interest in the meeting however, was display-* ed last night, when His Majesty drove to the race course and inspected the arrangements at the Royal Box, which was bedecked with flowers and the Royal enclosure was visited. The King then went to the Royal stables, where horses owned by him which are running this week are kept. The main interest centres in the race for the Gold Cup on Thursday.
