NELSON BOARD’S MONTHLY MEETING NEW SCHOOLS AND ADDITIONS TO BUILDINGS APPLICATIONS FROM COMMITTEES The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day was attended by the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C. (chairman), J. H. Harkness, W. C. Baigent, F. A. Carling, H. Barltrop, F. V. Knight, J. G. Wilkins, and E. J. Scantiebury. Accounts amounting to £7,422 were passed for payment. It was reported that a grant had been made for the erection of a new school at Brooklyn. A report by a sub-committee regarding a new site at Granity was deferred for consideration. In regard to Hinehaka’s application for a grant for a new school it was reported there was no reply to hand from the Department. The Education Department wrote declining an application for the establishment of a school at Lake Ro-to-iti. The tender of Leaper Bros, was accepted for the erection of a shelter shed at Maggie Creek. The foreman is to report on a request from Tapawera for additional accommodation. It was reported that tenders had been called for the erection of a new school at Waitahu. A grant of £l4 was made to the Appleoy committee towards the cost of a new floor for the upper class room. The Burnett’s I'ace committee asked for racks to be provided for drying pupils’ clothing. Further information is to be asked for by the board. The Foxhill committee asked for the erection of a bicycle shed. Further information is to be obtained. The Ikamatua committee was granted £5 for incidental expenses. The Motueka committee was granted £ll 4s 6d far a roof on a bicycle shed. It was pointed out that the woodwork classes had made the racks and provision would be made for 60 cycles for £ll 4s 6d. The Motupiko committee asked for £lO for a bicycle shed. Further information is to be obtained by the board. The chairman and the secretary are to meet the Nuggety Creek committee regarding the suggestion to move the school to a new site. It was decided that the floor of the Orinoco school be attended to. The Pigeon Valley committee was granted £3 10s for incidental expenses. The Rotokohu committee asked for an increased grant towards ground improvements. It was decided to reply stating that owing to lack of funds for the purpose the application would be declined. The chairman, Mr Harkness and the secretary were appointed a committee to interview the Seddonville committee regarding the remodelling of the infants’ classroom. The Summerlea committee was granted £5 towards a concrete path ’from the gate to the school. A letter was received from the ’Presbyterian Church Trustees at Tasman regarding the growth of weeds on the area leased by the board. It was decided that notice be given to terminate the lease and that Mr Carling and the secretary report on the position. The Central Takaka committee was granted £5 for incidental expenses. The Central (Takaka committee requested an additional classroom. It was decided to reply pointing out that the present school would provide accommodation for 57 pupils and in the view of the board would have no chance of making a successful application to the Department. It was decided that tenders be called for a new classroom at Tahunanui. The Kotinga committee applied for a grant towards the cost of ground improvements. It was decided to ask the committee for further details. The matter of a further tender for the bicycle shed at Takaka was referred to the secretary. The Wai-iti committee asked for a grant to cover half the cost of repairs to fences. The matter was referred to the committee with power to act. The Waimangaroa committee applied for an additional grant for ground improvement work. It was decided that the board grant £1 for £1 up to £3 on condition that the committee has the ground put in good condition. Mr F. I. Ledger was granted permission to survey the Whakarewa subdivision. An application by the Nelson branch of the Workers’ Educational Association for the use of a room at the ’board’s offices was referred to the executive committee. It was reported that arrangements had been made for the conveyance of Harakeke and Upper Moutere children to Motueka for woodwork and cookery classes. The board approved of the arrangements which would operate in about a fortnight’s time.
