BICYCLE SHEDS AT SCHOOLS

POLICY OF NELSON EDUCATION BOARD The Nelson Education Board has had many requests before it in recent months for the provision of bicycle sheds at schools. The erection of those sheds was proving an expensive matter on the funds available and members considered the board should adopt a definite policy in regard to the matter as it was considered many children within reasonable walking distances rode cycles to school thereby adding considerably to the cost of sheds to house the machines, It was pointed out in connection with a recent application from Takaka that eighteen of the children who rode cycles to school lived at distances of less than one mile. Some lived only a quarter of a mile away from the ground. On the other hand some children rode up to seven miles to school: It was decided that in future applications the board would not make provision for the accommodation of bicycles of children who lived less than one mile from the schools. It was also resolved to make application to the.department for the board to be reimbursed with expenditure on bicycle sheds.
