The Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting was held to-day in dull, cold weather. The track was excellent and the attendance very large. Arising out of a protest concerning the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club’s Winter Handicap, run on Thursday, the stipendiary stewards made the following report: “A protest entered by G. Neich, owner of Contract, who ian second against H. G. Hawkins, owner of Stitchbird, the winner, on the ground that the horse was cared for and trained by l-I. O. Barnett, was dealt with by the Judicial committee. Alter the hearing of evidence the committee found: (1) That a breach of rules 146 and 142 has been committed, in that a person who was not eligible was employed ir. the care, control and training of Stitchbird; (2) That by rule 144 (1) Stitchbird be disqualified for the race and the judge’s plaeings be altered.
