WINS GOLD VASE TOURNAMENT AMATEUR COURSE RECORD BROKEN APPEARANCE IN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP EAGERLY AWAITED (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11th June, 9.0 a.m.) LONDON, 10th June. J. Ferrier (Australia), in the first round of the London “Illustrated News” Gold Vase Golf Tournament, a 36 holes stroke competition at Ashridge, broke the amateur course record of 68, compared with the previous record of 69 made by P. B. Lucas last year. Ferrier was never troubled. He had par figures for the first two holes and “birdie” fours at the sixth and seventh, accomplishing the remaining half in par. Ferrier dropped a stroke at the short eleventh, but more than made up for it by “birdie” fours at the thirteenth and fourteenth and an “eagle” three at the fifteenth, where he holed a long putt. THE SECOND ROUND (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 10th June. Ferrier won the Gold Vase Tournament with a second round of 71 and an aggregate of 139. He beat the joint record of 143 by Bobby Jones and Rex Hartley. The second round leaders and aggregates were: Munn, 72 —142; Meisor, 73—150; I. Winter, 71—150; R. Quilter, 74—153; Ballieu, 77—153; Pennink, 75—153. Ferrier in the afternoon round was the essence of steadiness and he was only twice bunkered. He had par figures with the exception of the second and fourth, when he was one under par in each case. His figures were:— Outward: 443453444 —35. Inward: 334445454 —36. Total 71. Ferrier says he is delighted to add the Gold Vase to the Silver Tassie. Critics applaud his splendid performance in the three competitions.
