OBITUARY

MRS ELLEN WILLS Mrs Ellen Wills, who died at Stoke recently, at the age of 83 years, was the widow of the late Mr Frank Wills, of Brunnerton and Greymouth. She arrived in New Zealand with her husband and brother (the late Mr William King, who died at Reefton about eight years ago) and other relatives of her husband in 1877 after a very eventful six months’ voyage from Cornwall, England. The party remained in the North Island for a few months, and then went to the West Coast, settling hi Reefton about the end of 1877. Mr Wills became connected with the goldmining industry for some years, while Mrs Wills conducted a millinery shop. They then proceeded to Brunnerton, where Mr Wills engaged in coal-min-ing and Mrs Wills reopened her shop. They were there when the great Brunner disaster took place, and rendered valuable assistance. In 1913 they retired to private life at Greymouth. Mr Wills died in 1924, and Mrs Wills then returned to live quietly with her husband’s relatives in Reefton, finally leaving the West Coast with them and coming to Stoke in 1931. The deceased lady was a gentle, lovable and very generous person duririg her long life, and made many friends. She declined rapidly during the last year, and passed away peacefully. She leaves no personal .relatives. ‘ ~ MR THOMAS CHAMBERS The late Mr Thomas Chambers, of Lower Moutere, whose death has occurred, was born at Upper Holloway, London, in 1869. He went .to Canada in 1903, where he was farming until 1908, when he returned to England for one year, leaving again for New Zealand in 1909 and .arriving in Canterbury in January, 1910, 'later coming to the Nelson district, first in Wakefield, then Stoke, where he took up farming. Leaving there twelve years ago he went to Lower Moutere, where he resided until this death." He was a staunch worker in the -Methodist Church as a .local preacher, Sun-* day school superintendent, etc.. He was in failing health for .the last .Tour years. He was married in ;lis9 in England.
