A countryman who had gene to live in Manchester was made a lieutenant in the Territorials. His sense of his own importance was greatly increased. He could hardly speak of anything else but his new dignity. Meeting a native of his home town, he accosted him thus: “Well, Jim, I suppose you know I have been appointed lieutenant?” “Yes,” said im, “I heard so.” “Well, what do folks say about it?” “They don’t say nothin’.” replied truthful James: “they jest laugh.”
