VISITING MISSIONARIES

In the immediate future Nelson is to have quite a succession of visitors coming in the interests of certain of the great interdenominational missionary societies. These are societies which' belong not to any particular church or denomination, but find their memberships from ail evangelical churches and so m a real sense belong to the whole body of evangelical churches of (all names. The first to arrive of these is Miss Turner, a lady well known in Auckland, a teacher by profession, who is spending her holidays in deputation work in the interests of the ,British Syrian Mission, whose headquarters are in London and whose field is Syria. To mention that the Rev. • Evan Harries, formerly of St. James’s Presbyterian Church, Auckland, is now field chaplain of the Mission, will establish its reputation to those who may not have previously heard of it. Miss Turner lias visited Syria and so can speak with first hand knowledge of the work. She is to arrive on Monday next. Following Miss Turner comes Miss Gladys Yerbury as travelling secretary for the Unevangelised Fields Mission working in Africa, Amazonia, Central Asia and New Guinea. Miss Yerbury is a gifted speaker and was in Nelson a few years ago. Quite recently she lias visited New Guinea. Three New Zealanders are working in the Mission’s Amazonian field. Miss Reeves Palmer, also a Newt Zealander, home on furlough from her work on the staff of the Egypt General Mission, will be the next visitor, speaking not only in Nelson but also in Stoke, Richmond and Brightwater. The last of these missionary visitors are two young ladies from Auckland, Miss Danneford and Miss Hazel Fountain. who are coming for the annual meeting of the Nelson branch of the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission to he held at the end of June. Miss Danneford and Miss Fountain are quite recently back from a visit to India. 11l connection with the above, it will be of interest to many in Nelson and surrounding districts to know that the Rev. David Calder, Dominion Secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society, is coming to Nelson for the annual meeting of the local branch on Thursday, 11th June. Mr Calder comes on 4th June and returns to Wellington on 15th June. During his stay he will visit Richmond, Takaka, Collingwood, Motueka, Tasman, and Wakefield. Full details of the programme of fixtures in connection with the respective missionaries and their societies will be duly advertised.
