Pettit was excused from attendance. i ' PAYMENTS I The following payments were uuthorised from the various accounts: ! £ s. d.

The Nelson Institute made application for the payment of an instalment of £IOO of the Council's subsidy. 11m request was granted. The Richmond Borough Council wrote in regard to the recent- visit of I heir Excellencies Lord ami Lady Galway to Nelson. The Council expressed the hope that in the future Richmond Borough be accorded its rightful privileges on such occasions. The letter was rcceivC< The Nelson Hospital Board wrote advising that a considerable improvement had been shown in the water supply to the Hospital Air J. 11. Dayman drew the Louneil’s attention to the state of the road, footpath and ditches in Russell street. Councillor Russell reported that the Works Committee had visited Russell street and lie moved that attention be given to the matters referred to. The Nelson Harbour Board advised that the Board had decided to take steps to have its rates collected by the various local bodies and enquiring what remuneration the Council would require. .. The matter was held over pending a report by the Town Clerk. Col. J. E. llume asked lor permission to erect a car shed in Richmond Avenue The request was declines. .Mrs Annie T. Jones wrote suggesting that trees and flowering shrubs he planted oil the unused portion of the road on Britannia Heights, on the old Flagstaff site. The matter was reterred to the Reserves Committee. The Arbor Day Committee forwarded a report of a sub-committee as to tree planting for the coming season. Councillor Neale expressed the opinion that not enough use was being made of the flow-ering trees. He moved that the matter bt referred to the. Reserves Committee. The motion was seconded and carried. , Messrs Pitt and Moore asked lor a certificate that Gorrie street is not a public street. The request was grautA letter was received from the Wellington Fire and Accident Underwrites Association with regard to the proposed new bylaw relating to the brick area and stating that the Association was concerned about the erection of buildings of inferior construction m P-hc brick area, thus increasing the conflagration hazard. The matter was hold over until the next meeting, when the proposed bylaw would be submitted to the Council. Air B. Holbrook applied for a builclhm permit in respect of a proposed binkling for Alessrs J. G. Doel applied for permission to erect a one-storey shop building in Bridge street. The Mayor commented that he doubted if it was a genuine application. REPORTS WORKS COMMITTEE A meeting of the Works Committee held on Tuesday, the 19th May, was attended by Councillor Russell (chairman), the Mayor and Councillor AleArt bur. The Committee reported and recommended : As to the letter from Air \\. Crowe asking that the footpath be extended on the lower road in Upper Mount street: That the writer be informed that the street will he tarred in turn. As to the letter from Air C. Al. . Iloult forwarding for consideration a plan of a proposed new street through section 523 A : That consideration bo deferred pending provision being made

for the extension of .the road to Brook street. As to the letter from Air 11. Dimock applying for permission to erect a motor garage on Wakefield Quay and for improvements to the steps leading to his property: That the application for the garage ho refused and that the steps be repaired. CITY ENGINEER Tlu» City Engineer (Mr J. G. Little, john) reported for the fortnight ending 2ist May as follows:Streets and Footways. —Sealing work has been carried out in Waim.ca, Van Diemen and St. Vincent streets. Drainage.—There have been no interruptions during the last fortnight in the drainage system. G ;l s.— Extensions for new dwellings in Emaiio and Afurphy streets have been completed. An extension of the gas main in Church street is in progress. The additions to the purifiers have been completed. Reserves.—-Routine work has been carried out. Fleming) reported for the fortnight ending 21st May as follows:

Citv nnpiieations, 3098 (increase .11); city extensions, 5482 (increase 38); total 8580 (increase 49). Lighting load applied for, 18-48 k.w. (increase 3 k.w.) : heating load applied for 4 7 81 k.w. (increase 28 k.w.); power load applied for, 2167 k.w. (increase 2 k.w ) : total 8796 k.w. (increase 3b k.w.;. City, peak load day, 560 k.w. ; night, 800 k.w. Tahuna, Stoke and Wakatu, peak load day. 22 k.w. ; night, 37 k.w. 800' k.w. vans carried on the turbine for a considerable period last Friday evening. For the ensuing three winter months it will he necessary to run one of the reciprocating sets on the aUernoon shift to take a'portion of the load so that no damage will he done to the turbine.

H will he advisable to have an extra man on the afternoon shift- during the above period, also a better quality ol steaming coal will have to be purchased. PROPOSED GAS SUPPLY TO AIOANA AVENUE The City Engineer submitted the following report on the proposed supply of gas to Mon mi Avenue, Tahunanui : “The length of the main required is 22 chains from the end of the existing 1 j in supply on Britannia Heights to two houses and a iurther tour chains to a third existing house. Two more houses are-to ho proceeded with at once in which the usual appliances will ba installed if the gas is made available. The cost of the. main will he £l5O 3s; allow for five services at 30s each, £7 10s ; five meters at 555, £l3 15s; total, £l7l Bs. 1 estimate the consumption for each house will not ho less than 3000 cubic feet per month, which at 6s 8d per ICGO feet, plus meter rent, gives a return of 20s 6d each house per month, equal to £6l 10s per annum. The report was adopted. The Council adjourned at 11.35 p.m.
