POST OFFICE REVENUE

LARGE INCREASE ON LAST YEAR

CLIMBING OUT OF THE DEPRESSION MINISTER’S STATEMENT (By Telegraph--Special to "The Mail”! WELLINGTON, This Day. “Revenue results for the last financial year show how the Post Uttice, which reflects in its activities the general condition of business in the Dominion, is climbing out of the depression period in a highly satisfactory manner'' stated the Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) in an interview. “The gross revenue for the year ended 31st March,” he continued, “was £3,652,519, which was £222,296 above the gross revenue for 1935. “It is interesting to know the influence on the Department of the long period of economic depression, for last year’s receipts are only £552,1)00 in excess of the total of ten years ago, though at the rate of last year’s progress, the Post Office revenue should scon pass the £4,hVJ,OJS mark. "The main sources of revenue for the past year, with the corresponding figures lor 1935 were as follow :

“That the course of business through the channels provided by the Post Office lias materially changed during the last ten years is shown by the fact that in 1926' the revenue from telegrams was actually £108,060 greater than for the vear ended 31st March, 1936. hut the Post Office has not lost on this movement, because during the , same period telephone and toll revenue has increased by £427,669. “Commercial telegraph business during the past yc-ar demonstrated the improvement in general conditions by showing an increase of 11.29 per cent, in volume, while the revenue improved to the extent of 4.64, a smaller proportion due to the concessions made in rates. There was a similar disparity between the increased volume (15.95 per cent.j of the telephone toil traffic and the increased return to the Department (11.43 per cent.), due to the service being provided to the user at a lower cost for each transaction.”
