A BOMB-PROOF PORT

DEFENCE AGAINST AERIAL ATTACK (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received. 25th March, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, 24th March. In the House of Lords in resumption of the defence debate Lord Esher urged the construction of at least one bombproof port where liners can be unloaded and three of four capital ships can lie in safety and at least one large bombproof aerodrome where it would be possible to have several hundred aeroplanes, constituting a reprisal force. He also urged the construction of underground petrol stores. Lord Elibank regarded 12 more air squadrons as insufficient for Empire defence and quoted the Hon. R. G. Menzies, Federal Attorney General, saying on 20th March that “So long as the Empire was subject to a single King Emperor no part of the Empire can remain neutral, though each part will reserve its discretion how far it will go.”
