The Federal Ministry decided to take no action to prevent the execution in New Guinea of Ludwig Schmidt for the wilful murder of two natives. Cabinet’s reasons were later epitomised in the House oi' Representatives by tho Hon. W. M. Hughes, who said: “There is no other sentence but a death sentence that can satisfy the natives of New Guinea that they can get a fair deal.” Opposition members made vain appeals for a reprieve.
