“THE FOUR CROSSES” INN

On the main London road, between Daventry and Dunchurch, there is an hotel which used to be a popular hostelry in the old coaching days. At one time it was called “The Three Crosses. It is recorded that Dean Swift stayed there. He was not particularly pleased with the service, the proprietor s wife being a- well-known “nagger.” Before his departure Swift scratched with his diamond ring on the window-pane the following lines : ",You havo three crosses at your door, Hang up your wife and you’ll have four.” The inn has since been called “The Four Crosses.” The window was left intact until a few years ago, when the property was sold ■ and the pane was removed.
