SUBSIDISED SHIPPING IN PACIFIC

(Received 21st March, 2.0 pm) LONDON, 20th March. Lord Bledisloe. addressing the Liver pool branch of the Empire Society, said that the matters causing the most profound anxiety in New Zealand were, firstly, the craving for territorial expansion bv nations in the Pacific, and secondly, the gradual crushing out of Lmish mercantile "shipping by foreign subsidised competition, which may injuriously affect ship-building and other liidusl i ies, but .which was much graver owing to the increased helplessness in wartime through non-availability of auxiliary fighting strength and iransport. New Zealand and Australia which wore comparatively poor, could not fight tins iintan- competition. The British Government and people mus't do it, or ■mush shipping will be eliminated from the Pacific.
