REMARKS AT CITY COUNCIL

(To the Editor) Sir, —The so-called “Storm” in the City Council’s meeting as reported in tonight's “Mail” has made interesting reading no doubt, but it seems to. me that an apology is certainly due from Councillor Gibbs to Mr Moffatt. It was gratifying to see that Councillor Moyliagh’s explanation that he intended his remarks in reference to his withdrawal to include the Mayor, Councillor Neale and the Fire Board but that he made no mention of any withdrawal as to Councillor Gibbs, who certainly insinuated that now that the new Fire Station was completed and the Fire Board in operation Mr Moffatt’s term of office on that Board was ended, whereas the Mayor directly stated that Mr Moffatt’s term of appointment was until March 1937. What reason has Councillor Gibbs to even mention the matter until that time arrives? He has certainly tried to give the impression that Mr Moffatt is outstaying his term on the Fire Board! If he did not know that the appointment was for two years why did he not say so at once—although he should have known.

Anyone knowing Mr Moffatt at all knows that he would be one of the last to stay if ho thought he was not wanted so that it is not only unkind but antagonistic for Councillor Gibbs to suggest that Mr Moffatt sliouhil retire a year before the time for which he was appointed by the Nelson City Council as its representative on the Board. Councillor Moynagh has just cause for indignation and has no doubt still some feeling on the matter regarding Councillor Gibbs.—l am, etc., . FAIR PLAY. Nelson. 31st January.
