DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC

A TONSILITIS PATIENT (By Telegraph—Proas Association) GISBORNE, 31st January. While undergoing an operation in the Cook Hospital on Thursday for tonsilitis and adenoids, a six-year-old boy, Gerald Roger Littleworth, son of Mr and Mrs L. S. Ei. Littleworth, of Waerengaokuri, collapsed. At an inouest to-dnv, evidence was given that the child took the anaesthetic apparently normally. The operation was commenced and one tonsil was removed. When llie second tonsil was started the child suddenly ceased to breathe. Artificial respiration was begun and stimulants were administered, but the heart failed to respond. Cardiac massage was then performed and fluids injected into the arteries. The heart commenced beating, but soon ceased. Another medical witness stated as a result, of a post-mortem that death was due to an enlargement of the thysnus gland, which it was impossible to discover before death. A verdict was returned accordingly.
