BRITAIN AND RUSSIA

PHASE OF GREATER CORDIALITY FRENCH COMMENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) PARIS, 31st Januayr. The French Press is keenly interested in yesterday’s London conversations between M. Litvinoff, Mr Baldwin and Mr Eden. “Le Figaro” says that the conversations are a sequel to M. Litvinoff and Mr Eden’s recent long private talks at Geneva, adding that they show the importance Russia attaches to relations with Britain, relations which are becoming closer in view of the common pre-occupation, namely the question of Germany and Japan. “L’ Oeuvre” says that M. Litvinoff also attended Mr Eden’s Foreign Office luncheon in honour of Marshal Tukachevski, Soviet Vice-Minister of Defence, at which was also Mr A. Duff Cooper, War Secretary. This manifestation of an Anglo-Russian rapprochement is an event of considerable importance. Other French papers similarly comment and all emphasise that Anglo-Rus-sian relations appear to be entering on a phase of greater cordiality.
