THE SEAMEN’S STRIKE
TERMS REJECTED BY MEN [By Telegraph—Press Association] SYDNEY. 30th January. Over 2000 seamen this afternoon rejected the proposed terms for settlement of the shipping strike. Mr J. Keenan, strike leader, will report the result of the Sydney Labour Council and solicit the co-operation of all unions affiliated with it on behalf of the strikers.
The meeting also passed a resolution instructing the strike committee to seek a conference with the Prime Minister with a view to the abolition of licenses.
The terms adopted by owners and strike leaders at Melbourne are that the men should offer for work under the new award, and also apply for licenses under (he Transport Workers Act on all vessels not at present in commission,’ such ves : sels to be manned exclusively by unionists, and that members of the Seamen’s Union agree to fill all vacancies as they occur. Shipowners agreed to engage no more volunteers after the union passed a resolution authorising members to resume work. Shipowners have assured volunteers at present working thaf'they will not be displaced.
