EXPORT TOBACCO LEAF
SALE AT 1/3 PER LB. IN LONDON TRIAL SHIPMENT FROM NELSON
Messrs E. Buxton and Company Limited advise having received a report from the Department of Agriculture that the trial shipment of Nelson-grown tobacco leaf forwarded to London by the Port Bowen has been sold for one shilling and three pence per lb (Is 3d) sterling, and that full reports and details will follow by an early mail. Interviewed regarding the report Mr f • O. Hamilton explained that 64 tierces ot tobacco leaf, varying in weight fiom 900 to 1300 lbs, were sent to London to be sold through the High Commissioner's office. The experimental shipment was sent under a Government guarantee of Is per lb. Mr Hamilton said that until details ol the sale arrived it was not known whether the tobacco was sold as a whole, or whether the price was average one or not. It was the first shipment of any size from the Nelson district and comprised leaf which was over and above that grown under contract for New Zealand companies. The price of Is 3d sterling would cover the guarantee, and a further payment would he due to growers who supported the shipment. It was usually the case with trial shipments of produce that a loss resulted, and without seeing the details and report on the quality of the leaf, it appeared that the price returned oil this shipment was satisfactory.
